How to avoid phishing and scams during your job search

Scams and phishing attacks are on the rise

There are an increasing number of scam messages being sent through WhatsApp and job boards. Scammers impersonate recruiters and recruitment companies and they promote fake job ads to obtain personal information from the job seeker (read about it here).  All job seekers should remain on alert.

Scammers and cyber criminals target job seekers with job offers to obtain your personal data, including your social security number and other information, by illegal means.

On Time Edge uses traditional recruiting practices

On Time Edge does not utilize third-party recruiters or recruitment agencies.  We have full-time employees who are dedicated to sourcing, interviewing, and engaging potential employees using a traditional process that always includes email messages using our company email standard, live phone calls, and face-to-face video interviews using Microsoft Teams.  We will never ask any potential candidate for their social security number or private data during the interview process.  We never ask any candidate or newly hired team member to provide a credit card or banking information for "verification purposes."  Finally, we do not ask any candidate or newly hired team member to purchase their own laptop or other equipment, either from our company or from any other third-party vendor.

What to do if you responded to a phishing email

If you have been a target or a victim of a recruiting scam, phishing attack, or any other cyber crime, you should report the incident(s) to the platform(s) where it/they occurred (WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Indeed, Facebook, Gmail, Yahoo, etc.), and to the government authorities for your state and country.  In the United States, report fraud to the FDC.

If you think a scammer has your information, like your Social Security, credit card, or bank account number, go to IdentityTheft.gov. It provides specific actions based on the information that you lost.

If you think you clicked on a link or opened an attachment that downloaded harmful software, update your computer’s security software. Then run a scan and remove anything it identifies as a problem.

How to report phishing

If you got a phishing email or text message, help fight scammers by reporting it.
